10,000 Fireworks

1st-class-treats

With Stacie accepting a new job out in Utah and some time in between, I parlayed some unpaid leave from work so we could put together a long summer vacation to celebrate the completion of her residency and her 30th birthday. We were able to put together a 3+ week long trip. Rare for us workaholic Americans.

It’s off to Ireland and the Amalfi Coast we go, with quick stops in London and Paris in between. We chose Ireland because we both love traditional Irish music/culture and the landscape looks beautiful. Plus, I love beer. The Amalfi Coast satisfies Stacie’s love of the coast/beach alongside my love of awe inspiring views. London and Paris were natural stops on the travel between the two, especially since I’ve yet to experience either.

I was able to parlay some Avios rewards points alongside a lot of research to cobble together a first class flight from Boston to Dublin departing on July 4th. A rare treat for us coach travelers. I felt a bit unpatriotic leaving the country on the 4th of July, but that feeling was quickly turned on its head after we took off in Boston at 9pm, banked north, and were treated to a perfect view of fireworks exploding all across the city. They were exploding everywhere. In the harbor, in the city, in the distance, right below us, and we could see them all in front of a backdrop of post-sunset colors and heat lightning. It was surreal. I don’t think anyone has ever felt so patriotic when leaving their country on Independence Day, and as I settled into my lay-flat seat and prepared for an early morning in Dublin, I relished in the knowledge that I doubt anyone saw more fireworks than we did on this Independence Day.

I couldn’t get a photo of them to come out from the plane, but it was a treat to see.

Day 5 of our trip was one I was very excited for, driving the Connemara Loop.  Connemara is a sort of oddly defined region of Ireland.  It centers around Connemara National Park, but the national park makes up only a small portion of the area dubbed "Connemara".  The national park itself has no...

Cycling Sky Road

Day three of our 23 day European extravaganza was rather uneventful, with the most notable thing during our commute from Dublin to Clifden in the West of Ireland being the rare occurrence of an Irish skyscape (gray and cloudy), but still no rain.  We did stop at Clonmacnoise along the way...

Two Days in Dublin

Two Days in Dublin

Our flight touched down in sunny Dublin right around 9am after a few hours of restless sleep.  That's 4am our time and yes, I did say sunny Dublin, which would become a theme of our visit to Ireland. Our first day in Dublin was really a bit of a waste as we tried to defeat jet lag. ...
